I just came back from the Dollar store, picking up a few cleaning items. Standing in the checkout line, right at the cashier and watching him punch in the prices of my items into the register. Low and behold, right outside the doors you hear all this screaming and yelling going on. It was a female being apprehended by the police. Not one police, but what looked like ten trying to restrain her as she lay on the sidewalk in a distraught state. Actually, her condition could be described as more than distraught, she was going berserk as she screamed, wrestled and kicked at the officers. Her body moving wildly all over the ground as they tried to calm her down while handcuffing her. One officer even called her sweetheart as he tried to find out her name. But she I think, did not hear him over her own voice that rang out up and down the street. She kept saying over and over redundantly...."Give me back my baby! Get your hands off me!" That scene was very disturbing, but what was even more disturbing was the fact that one of the female police officers was holding a tiny infant. The baby looked so small, maybe no more than a month old with black hair. You could see the tiny head out side the jacket it was wrapped in. The spectators kept saying, "Cover that baby's head up," because it is chilly outside. The police officer ignored the comments of the onlookers and she stayed right there while the other officers struggled to get control of the irate woman still on the ground. Maybe they thought if the woman saw her baby right there, she would calm down.....but she didn't! Eventually, the woman holding the baby disappeared into the building next door to the Dollar Store.
The horrible situation continued as they tried to carry the woman to the back of a police truck. She was not going willfully. All this taking place on a busy street, cars going and coming, but the focus was not on the traffic, which should have been stopped, but on the woman who was determined not to be put in the back of the truck. I was so afraid, thinking that any minute, the officers would use a weapon against her, especially when she kicked at an officer and he yelled out in protest. Thank goodness that didn't happen. From the sidewalk to the back of the truck, it was a mad struggle to gain control of the situation, from the officers point of view and even the viewpoint from the apprehended female, who at this point was still screaming and yelling..."Help Me!"
The officers won the battle after securing her inside the truck, for when they bought her out a few minutes later, she was strapped to a gurney and she was quiet as they rolled her to the back of an ambulance as if she had been sedated or something. I presume she was being taken to the hospital for evaluation or something.
Since I don't know what happened, a lot of questions run through my mind, what's going to happen to the woman, what had she done? Was she on drugs? Who called the police on her? Was her baby in danger? Why was her baby taken away from her? Was it even her baby? What's going to become of the baby? Does she have other children? All I know, something drastic must have happened for this kind of situation to come off like a dramatic movie on TV. Only this time, it was no act, the people involved were not actors. This is somebody's real life taking a turn for the worse as it collapsed on the street in front of the Dollar Store. Whoever this woman was, to me it seems her life will never be the same after today. Let's pray for her and her situation, because what I witnessed today shows you just how bad things can get and how a good day can change at a moments notice. I hope her and her baby are in good hands.
